Ben Nash’s Top Tips for EOFY
Be Informed
“Be clear on what you can and can’t claim. A lot of people miss out on [deductions] because they don't know what they can claim. The ATO [Australian Taxation Office] has some really easy-to-understand and helpful guides on its website about the different things that you can claim, and accountants are generally a good resource to draw on to figure that out as well.”
Be Consistent With Your Record Keeping
“Keeping records and being clear on your numbers is really powerful and allows you to be smart with your planning. Different people are different in terms of how they like to manage their tax. [You could] keep your receipts in a shoebox or take photos of your receipts and store them on the ATO app. As long as you're keeping your records throughout the year, you won’t miss deductions when it’s time to do your tax return.”
Hot Tip: Want a super easy way to wrangle those receipts? The Officeworks app lets you scan and store them digitally.
Be Smart With Your Spending
“Each tax time, look at the expenses coming up, [like whiteboard markers or sticky notes], and [get] them in before the end of the financial year to get the deductions and the tax benefits a year early.”

Ben Nash’s EOFY Tech Must-Haves

High-Performance Laptop
“It’s been a few years since I got my laptop and I feel like the computing technology just gets faster and better quite quickly. Recently, I’ve been doing a little bit more design work and [I need] a bit of additional computing power. Time-saving is a big [benefit for this upgrade]. I find that if I’m doing design work or videography, [the laptop] can feel quite slow, which is a little bit frustrating, particularly if you’re trying to get a task off your list.”

Laptop Charger
“I don’t know what happens to laptop chargers, but they just seem to disappear! It seems like whenever I'm looking for one, it’s never handy, so I think I might even get two, just so I can put them where I want them. That way I don’t have to go searching around every time, particularly because I only seem to notice it when you get that little warning that your battery is about to die, and then it's a bit of a scramble.”

Wireless Headphones
“I’ve got some wireless headphones already and they’re probably about six years old. I feel like they’re good for listening to [audio] but the microphone doesn’t work very well, and so I find myself constantly mucking around in meetings. It’s a little bit frustrating, especially if you’re jumping from one thing to another thing. Also, if we’re doing client meetings, it's not ideal as well.”

Wireless Keyboard
“I’ve had my current keyboard for about 10 years now and it's starting to look a little worse for wear. I’ve been putting off buying a new one, but I think it's about time – and what better time than the end of the financial year.”
